Simple Tests to Check for Leaks at Home

Suspecting a leak but not sure? These simple do-it-yourself tests can help you determine whether your home has a hidden water leak before you call a professional. They require no special tools and take just a few minutes.

The Water Meter Test

This is the most reliable DIY method to confirm whether your home has an active leak. Here is how to do it:

  1. Turn off all water inside and outside your home. This means faucets, toilets (do not flush), washing machine, dishwasher, ice maker, irrigation system, and any other water-using appliance or fixture.
  2. Locate your water meter. In Florida, it is usually in a box near the street or at the property line. Lift the cover carefully (watch for insects).
  3. Read the meter. Most meters have a sweep hand (like a clock) and a low-flow indicator (a small triangle or star). Write down the exact reading.
  4. Check the low-flow indicator. If it is spinning or moving with all water off, you have an active leak right now.
  5. Wait 1 to 2 hours. Do not use any water during this period.
  6. Read the meter again. If the numbers have changed, water flowed through your system while everything was off — confirming a leak.

What the results mean:

  • Low-flow indicator spinning: Active leak, likely significant. Call for professional detection.
  • Meter reading changed after waiting: Confirmed leak. The amount of change indicates approximate severity.
  • No change: No active leak in the pressurized supply system at this time. Note: this test does not detect drain leaks or irrigation leaks (unless irrigation was pressurized during the test).

Isolating Supply vs. Irrigation

If the meter test confirms a leak, you can narrow down the source:

  1. Turn off the irrigation system valve (usually near the backflow preventer by the meter).
  2. Repeat the meter test.
  3. If the meter stops moving, the leak is in your irrigation system.
  4. If the meter keeps moving, the leak is in your house plumbing.

The Toilet Dye Test

Toilets are one of the most common sources of hidden water waste. A leaking toilet flapper can waste hundreds of gallons per day without making any noise.

  1. Remove the toilet tank lid.
  2. Add 5 to 10 drops of food coloring (or a dye tablet) to the tank water.
  3. Do not flush. Wait 15 to 30 minutes.
  4. Check the toilet bowl. If colored water appears in the bowl, the flapper is leaking and needs replacement.

Repeat this test for every toilet in your home. A single leaking toilet can add $50 to $100 per month to your water bill.

Visual Inspection Checklist

Walk through your home and check these areas for signs of hidden leaks:

  • Under sinks: Check all cabinet floors for moisture, staining, warping, or mold
  • Around toilets: Feel the floor around the base for soft spots or dampness
  • Water heater: Look for corrosion, drips, or moisture at the base and connections
  • Washing machine: Check supply hoses for bulging, cracking, or drips at connections
  • Ceilings: Look for water stains, bubbling paint, or sagging drywall
  • Walls: Feel for damp or cool spots, especially near bathrooms and kitchens
  • Baseboards: Check for warping, peeling, or discoloration at the base of walls
  • Foundation: Walk the exterior perimeter and look for cracks, wet spots, or erosion
  • Yard: Look for unusually green patches, soggy areas, or sinkholes (when it has not rained)

When to Call a Professional

DIY tests are useful for confirming a problem exists, but they cannot locate the leak. If any of these tests indicate a leak, or if you are seeing signs of water damage but cannot find the source, professional detection is the next step. Our equipment can find leaks that are invisible and inaudible to homeowners — behind walls, under slabs, and underground.

Do not attempt to tear open walls or break through concrete to find a leak yourself. This often causes more damage and cost than the leak itself. Professional detection pinpoints the location so repairs can be targeted and minimal.
