How to Prepare Your Plumbing for Hurricane Season
Hurricane season in Florida runs from June through November, and preparing your plumbing system is an often-overlooked part of storm preparation. High winds, heavy rain, flooding, and debris impacts can all damage your plumbing. Here is how to prepare and what to do after a storm.
Before the Storm
Know the location of your main water shutoff valve and make sure it operates smoothly. If you evacuate, shut off the water supply to prevent damage from pipes that may be broken by storm impacts. Secure any outdoor plumbing fixtures that could be damaged by wind or debris. Fill bathtubs with water for emergency use before the storm arrives.
Protecting Your System
Turn off your water heater before the storm to prevent damage if water supply is interrupted. If flooding is expected, shut off the main water and sewer connections to prevent contaminated floodwater from entering your home through the plumbing system. Secure any exposed pipes with straps or padding to prevent wind vibration damage.
After the Storm
After a hurricane, inspect your plumbing system carefully before fully restoring service. Check for visible damage to pipes, fixtures, and water heater. Turn on the main water supply slowly and check for leaks. Listen for unusual sounds that might indicate new leaks. Check the water meter for flow when nothing is in use.
When to Call for Inspection
If your home sustained any structural damage during the storm, a professional leak detection inspection is recommended even if you do not see obvious plumbing problems. Storm impacts can cause hairline cracks in pipes and loosened joints that may not leak immediately but will worsen over time. Early detection prevents these hidden issues from becoming major problems.
