Comparing Leak Detection Methods: Which Is Best?

Professional leak detection employs several different technologies, each with its own strengths and ideal applications. Understanding these methods helps you appreciate why professional detection is so much more effective than DIY approaches, which typically rely on just one method or none at all.

Acoustic Detection

Best for: Slab leaks, underground water mains, pressurized supply line leaks. Acoustic detection uses sensitive microphones to hear the sound of water escaping from pipes. Highly precise for pinpointing leak locations. Requires the pipe to be pressurized. Less effective for drain line leaks or very slow seeps.

Thermal Imaging

Best for: Behind-wall moisture, roof leaks, broad-area moisture assessment, pre-purchase inspections. Thermal cameras detect temperature changes caused by hidden moisture. Covers large areas quickly. Non-contact and non-invasive. Shows the extent of moisture spread. Cannot pinpoint the exact pipe failure point on its own.

Pressure Testing

Best for: Confirming whether a leak exists, isolating which section of plumbing is leaking. By pressurizing specific sections of the plumbing system and monitoring for pressure drops, technicians can confirm a leak and narrow down which line is affected. Essential first step in the detection process but does not locate the specific point of the leak.

Tracer Gas

Best for: Extremely difficult-to-find leaks, non-pressurized pipe leaks, sewer line leaks. A safe, non-toxic gas is introduced into the pipe. The gas escapes at the leak point and rises through soil or building materials to the surface, where sensitive detectors find it. Effective when acoustic methods cannot produce clear results.

The Professional Advantage

A professional leak detection company uses all of these methods as part of a comprehensive approach. The technician selects and combines methods based on the specific situation, using each technology where it performs best. This multi-method approach delivers the most accurate and complete results.
