The 20 Dollar Part That Causes Catastrophic Floods: Washing Machine Hoses

Insurance industry studies consistently rank washing machine supply hose failures among the most expensive causes of home water damage. The reason is simple physics: those two hoses behind your washer are pressurized around the clock, and when one bursts while you are at work or away for the season, water flows at full line pressure, often 500 gallons or more per hour, until someone notices. Why Hoses Fail

Standard black rubber hoses degrade from the inside. Heat, chlorinated water, and constant pressure make the rubber brittle, and the failure is usually sudden rather than a slow drip. • Confirm there is at least 4 inches of clearance between the connections and the wall so the hoses are not under constant stress.
• Find the shutoff valves and make sure they actually turn. Seized laundry valves are common in homes more than a decade old.

Braided stainless steel hoses cost around 20 to 30 dollars a pair and resist bursting far better than rubber. A single-lever shutoff valve makes it easy to kill water to the washer whenever you leave town. The Slow Leak Version

Not every hose failure is a burst.
